Hatsune Miku Wig

Hello and welcome everyone to the start of the Hatsune Miku Vocal Module. The first thing we're going to go over is the wig. If you already know how to style the wig, feel free to skip ahead to the next tutorial. So if you don't have one already, you're going to need to purchase a wig and wig cap. I browse around until I find something I like. There are plenty of sites to look at for wigs. You can choose one with or without pigtails or even find one with just the one pigtail. Personally, I went ahead and bought one with both pigtails because Miku is the main character I cosplay. If you haven't already, take a look at the article I wrote on the differences between wigs. This will also definitely help you out when choosing to buy your wig. Mesh. This is important. You can u

Pleated Skirt

Welcome to the skirt tutorial. Here you will find out how to make the pleated skirt and add the yellow stripe to the bottom of the skirt. Materials Needed ScissorsDraft paperMeasuring tapeFabricMuslin (if you want to make a test version first)RulerModule ImageSewing machineTapePinsZipperChalk1/2in seam allowance Measurements  The very first thing you want to do is get some measurements. You want to measure where the skirt is going to sit on your body. For me, this is typically my waistline or my hip/pelvic bone depending on my personal preference at the time. Write this measurement down on a piece of paper to keep track of it. You're going to need it again.  Measure the length of your skirt. This is how far down you want it to go. I generally go with about 14in to...

What is Cosplay?

Greetings everyone and welcome to the site. If you're here, then hopefully you've stumbled upon this place out of curiosity. We're going to go ahead and jump right in. So what exactly is cosplay? In a previous article, I gave a very brief definition of what cosplay was to me. Cosplay stands for costume play. Costume play is, generally stating, dressing up as a fictional character who you favor whether it's from a video game, a Japanese anime, a Japanese manga, a television series, a book and so on. It can literally be any sort of fictional character or even a celebrity. Heck, you could even make up your own character and dress up as that if you really wanted to, and no one would judge because costume play is meant to be something you enjoy. Brief History of Cosplay So where di...

Cosplay Etiquette

Rules? Why what ever do you mean? Yes, there are rules to cosplay. It's more just basic etiquette rather than rules per se. So let's hop right into it. Ask before you take Pretty simple here. Please ask cosplayers or anyone really before you take their picture. Just because they're dressed up, it does not give you consent. For the most part, they will allow you to take their pictures. Don't touch someone's props without permission People spend a lot of time on their props. I watched someone take a cosplayer's prop (Lux's staff), and without meaning to, they destroyed it. This resulted in the cosplayer bawling their eyes out. It's hours upon hours of work, and to have it destroyed would be devastating so please ask permission before just going up and poking or touching someone's props.

7 Ways to Store Wigs

Welcome, and this is going to be some brief advice on storing wigs. There are numerous ways to store them, and overall it's what happens to be your own preference. Here's 7 ways to store wigs: Repackage the wig This method some people prefer because it doesn't allow the wig to gather more knots or collect dust. Wig heads If you have the spare space, placing the wigs on a bunch of mannequin heads is an idea. Wig rack These are great, but they can be pricey. They're able to store multiple wigs on one rack. Mannequin stand with a head Great way to store your wigs if you have the space. Camera tripod This is a pretty convenient method when you don't have a stand or funds for one, and this just happens to be lying around. Wig stand For single wig use, but it can also be used to...

Styling Your Wig for Cosplay

Styling wigs can either be an easy or difficult process depending on what the hairstyle is. You may need extra materials to help with this process or even a friend's head to borrow while you work on the wig. With lace front and full lace wigs you have a bit of wiggle room and don't have to stress too much about the weft of the wig showing. This also applies to full human hair wigs. Because the hair of these wig types are sewn one strand at a time, there is more flexibility. You can part these wigs without having the weft show. These can also be braided. Pure synthetic wigs and full weft wigs are difficult to style because of the wefts potentially being exposed, but it can be done. So how do you style your wig? Well, first you've hopefully looked at the hairstyle for your chara...

Wig Care: Things You Need to Know

Today I'm going to provide you with some vital information to caring for your wigs. Ensuring that you use proper care with your wig can make it last much longer. First things first, a wig stand of sorts is a must. I've tried many ways without some sort of stand to care for my wigs. It's not impossible, but it does take a heck of a lot more time and frustration. You can make a stand out of anything really. I use a photography tripod stand and just stuck a foam mannequin head on top. It doesn't have to be fancy. Brushing Your Wig Never ever brush your wig with a regular hairbrush. Simply put, wigs don't regrow hair like we do. The constant pulling and tugging will make the wig shed more than it may naturally do. Using a normal brush will ruin the wig and shorten its lifespan. You will need a

Differences Between Wigs

If you're here, you've hopefully picked out a character to cosplay or are just seeking some quick advice on wigs. The goal of this post is to help differentiate between the various types of wigs. Choosing the right wig for yourself can really have an impact on how you cosplay. And with so many options, knowing information about each can help you choose the wig best for you. Real or Fake? First things first, do you want a wig made of synthetic fibers or human hair? Each definitely has their own prose. Human hair can be styled and dyed without the concern of melting said hair. Synthetic fibers without heat resistance would melt at the mere touch of a flat or curling iron. When deciding between human and synthetic hair, consider how often you're willing to style the wig. Human ha...

Characterization

Welcome to the first steps of cosplay. I find this to be one of the more difficult steps myself because I tend to want to switch halfway through creating a cosplay. Some people shoot for several cosplays. I only shoot for one because of all the effort I put into my outfits, and I'm a very slow artist. Step 1: Pick Your Character(s) This is where you always want to start. It could you take a day to decide or a hot minute. It all depends on you. Choosing your character is an important step (most important in my opinion). There are a few things you want to keep in mind when choosing your character. Do you resonate with your character? Easy, right? I actually have a harder time picking a character I wanna really shoot for. I resonate with some better than others. The main character I pick ha
